The Hamakua Route is nothing like the road to Hana either. There are some tight turns through the gulches, but it’s not a one lane road anywhere. There aren’t any one lane roads here you’ll be driving on in all likelihood, certainly none of the three major cross island routes.Coffee is always a big one as some of the best in the world is grown on the Big Island. Also vanilla beans and honey. You can get these at pretty much any grocery store, although I like buying from the farms direct when possible. We also like the volcano specific tshirts, jackets, and hoodies at Volcanoes National Park.On Kauai I just never experience the "stink-eye" many folks do on other islands like Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Even though I've only lived there (part time) a few years, no locals or kama'aina (including most of which I don't know) have ever given me a dirty look.
